Communicate for Impact
Dr. Merissa Ferrara Elisei, a master communicator and communication coach, offers presentation services, coaching, and training to elevate your influence and ignite action. As a dedicated communication coach, she empowers professionals to express with clarity and confidence.
Together, we can create meaningful change
Real change happens when we deconstruct what is not working and build positive communication skills for better outcomes. I have had the honor of teaching, workshopping, and researching interpersonal communication for over 20 years. Or sometimes you just want to celebrate and bond. I’m in for that too! This passion drives my work as a communication coach, helping individuals improve both personal and professional interactions.
"I Felt Like a Fraud in Every Job Interview"
Sarah came to my office junior year, completely defeated. She’d bombed three internship interviews in a row—not because she wasn’t qualified, but because she couldn’t articulate her worth without sounding like she was reading from a generic resume template.
“I freeze up,”
She told me. “I know I’m smart, but I sound like an idiot the second someone asks me to talk about myself.”
Sound familiar?
Sarah’s problem wasn’t lack of talent—it was lack of authentic communication skills. She was trying to be the “perfect candidate” instead of being herself. After working together on developing her voice and learning to tell her story with confidence, she landed her dream internship. Not by being perfect, but by being real.
Six months later, she texted me: “Dr. Merissa, I just got promoted. Turns out being myself was the superpower I needed all along.”
This is exactly why I do what I do.
I’m Dr. Merissa Ferrara Elisei, and I’m that professor, career coach, and leadership coach who actually gets it. I’m all about helping you communicate like the confident, authentic human you are, build relationships that actually matter, and absolutely crush it in both work and life.
For more than 20 years, I’ve been teaching and researching interpersonal and relational communication at The College of Charleston, and honestly? It’s been incredible. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring thousands of students through all those messy, exciting, sometimes terrifying transitions—college, first jobs, figuring out what the heck you actually want to do with your life. As a career coach and educator, I’ve been honored with multiple teaching awards, but what I’m most proud of is helping people develop the people skills that actually move the needle.
My Professional Work
Here’s what I’m passionate about: people skills training, empathetic leadership, persuasion, boundary-setting, and presentation skills, basically all the human superpowers that actually
determine whether you succeed or just survive. As a leadership coach, I help people develop the emotional intelligence and communication game that turns “meh” managers into leaders people actually want to follow.
I’ve worked on health communication campaigns from local community projects to international initiatives, and I absolutely love partnering with small businesses to create branding and social media strategies that feel genuine—not like another generic corporate account trying to be relatable.
Through 4Ward Operations, I design workshops that actually work because they’re built around real human psychology and communication science. My career coach and leadership coach experience ensures every program I create gives you the people skills that employers are desperately looking for. Some of my most popular workshops:
- Instilling a Feedback Culture
- Motivating & Engaging Gen Z (yes, I actually understand your generation)
- Collaborating Across Generations (because let’s be real, the workplace is wild right now)
- Conflict & Difficult Conversations
- Onboarding for Success
- Building Healthy Work-Life Boundaries
I’ve got a BA from Marquette University (where I was literally the Golden Eagle mascot the costume still lives in my closet) and both an MA and PhD from Michigan State University.
My Philosophy & Focus
My whole approach is influenced by Meg Jay and Brené Brown, two absolute legends who understand that how we communicate, connect, and show up in our twenties and beyond literally shapes everything.
From Jay’s The Defining Decade, I teach about building identity capital, think of it as your personal brand, but authentic. Every internship, side hustle, networking conversation, even that random job you took to pay rent? It all counts toward building who you’re becoming. I’m also huge on weak ties, those acquaintances and extended network connections who often hold the keys to opportunities your close friends can’t access. For Gen Z especially, mastering identity capital and weak ties isn’t just helpful—it’s essential for navigating this absolutely chaotic job market.
From Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection, I bring the revolutionary idea that authenticity beats perfection every single time. Real confidence comes from vulnerability, courage, and genuine connection. The communication that actually matters isn’t about having perfect responses—it’s about showing up as yourself, setting boundaries that protect your energy, and building trust with others and yourself.
I’ve watched this play out countless times. One of my students landed her dream job not through LinkedIn applications or formal interviews, but through an honest conversation with someone’s cousin at a coffee shop—a perfect weak tie moment. She was anxious and admitted she wasn’t sure what she wanted, but her genuine vulnerability and curiosity made her unforgettable. That conversation led to a job offer that completely changed her trajectory.
These frameworks drive everything I do: empowering people to develop the confidence and communication skills that help them seize opportunities, build relationships that actually fulfill them, and step fully into who they’re meant to become.
Communication isn’t just a skill, it’s your secret weapon for belonging, resilience, and growth. Whether I’m working with students in the classroom, career coaching graduates who are completely lost, or helping companies actually engage their workforce, my mission stays the same: helping you realize that your voice is your superpower and giving you the tools to use it with impact.
Beyond the Classroom
When I’m not teaching, coaching, or helping people level up their people skills, you’ll find me:
- Traveling (43 countries and counting. Study abroad changed my life and I’m obsessed with helping others have that experience)
- Playing or watching soccer (been my happy place since I was a kid)
- Soaking up life with my family on Isle of Palms—because South Carolina sunshine hits different
- Running Tasi Bites and Blends, the café my husband and I have owned in Mt. Pleasant for 18+ years
- Spending time with my husband Mark and our twins, Sydney and Dante
Our family was also a foster family, which has taught me more about resilience, adaptability, and what real strength looks like than any textbook ever could. These experiences have made me a better leadership coach and honestly, a better human.
